So in the result, we can configure approximately VXLAN is also solution for spanning-tree. Because spanning-tree can be painful for a big layer 2 data center. VXLAN encapsulates the original framesbroadcast framesmulticast frames and unicast frames.
So we can consider it as an tunneling technique or a layer 2 overlay scheme, over layer 3 network. So a big size frame can be drop. VTEP device send the all unknown destination framesmulticast frames or broadcast frames using multicast. VXLAN can also be use to connect multiple data centers. What we are going to do is to create a Python script that creates a blank Word document, then it will collect all the images in the same folder to put into the word document.
In addition, to keep the generated document neat, we will insert a table and then put each image into a separate cell. The best way to get to know is to try by yourself - just use a router with Linux netem or BSD dummynet to emulate the characteristics of your WAN and run tests over it.
But as you talk about router I guess your site are connected with layer 3 so you can use L2TP to do Layer 2 over Layer 3 4 in fact.
They were developed because enterprises need to deliver data and share resources at different geographical locations. Viptela solution has four main components. Choose two A. Test the connectivity between the two hosts with ICMP pings - use ip netns exec to execute commandsIntroduction. All traffic is encrypted end-to-end and takes the most direct path available for minimum latency and maximum performance. It connect devices that are separated by a broader geographical area than a LAN 2.
Consider a cloud service provider, with a data center that can contain thousands upon thousands of virtual machines. VLANs are a layer 2 protocol addition to the ethernet specification where crossing from site to site over a WAN would require layer 3 using IP protocols in other words, it IS a routing problem. VxLAN offers a hierarchal, end-to-end method to segment network traffic to provide the performance and security controls that digital enterprises demand.
Does it all matter? If tunnel endpoint is reachable via explicitly routed LSP, the payload will follow that path. Table of Contents. The biggest thing is failing over the Database servers What DB do you use?
VXLAN EVPN Multi-Site Design and Deployment White Paper
VXLAN is a network virtualization technology that attempts to address the scalability problems associated with large cloud computing deployments. Leverage per-tenant segmentation. Version 5.
This also keeps replication a lot lower. One of its great virtues is its flexibility in delivering secure, connectivity over multiple transport technologies. This gives the operator a unified service interface despite using multiple underlay technologies.
Enterprises get full visibility over all their VPN services, including management of users and permissions and setting security policies, all from one SD-WAN interface. Being SDN-based, it provides service intelligence. The SDN controller is able to set up connectivity and enforce service levels, and it can automate operations and provide overall policy management. Integration with the cloud is also easier, allowing connections with cloud resources, whether compute or storage, to be set up and managed in a more automated and secure way.
It is also the most widely used tunneling protocol in data centers DCs. There are a number of advantages to using EVPN as the transport layer.
This is more resource efficient than Layer 3 L3 routing, where each packet is routed separately. It is also able to connect directly to Layer 2 L2 devices, such as bare metal servers, as well as through VRF tables to L3 routing.
EVPN, in contrast, supports both layers, treating them as a single service type. This allows local subnets to be integrated with routing context. Other service intelligence characteristics include the ability of the SDN controller to remotely download and install forwarding information for full mesh branch connectivity. It also allows for centralized policy enforcement and, because EVPN is also L2, this includes domain, security zone, subnet and branch for hierarchical policy schemes.
In this way, cloud resource access policies and permissions can also be extended, by the SDN controller, to specific security zones or subnets within connected branch offices. Secure and policy-driven integration of cloud value-added services into general business services is one of its key differentiators.HPE VNS: TM200 \u0026 VXLAN over IPsec Demo

A route exchange scenario at the border leaf or border spine switch is referred as a handoff scenario. Also, the Cisco Nexus Series switch provides higher route and VRF scaling capabilities that are required for a border leaf switch.
Additional configuration is not required to support VM movement across fabrics. If you want to connect two data center fabrics, restrict the overlay within a data center. Connect two data center instances with an inter data center instance. This way, any instability in one data center will not be spread to the other. Failures can be contained since we are separating the administrative domains.
Here, traffic from the source data center terminates at the border leaf or borderPE switch, and a new Layer-3 inter data center instance sends the traffic to the border leaf switch or borderPE switch of the target datacenter.
A high level data plane flow is depicted below:. This lookup maps to the appropriate bridge domain. Necessary configuration knobs will need to be added in BGP under VRFand under neighbor evpn address family to originate a default route towards EVPN neighbors and drop all other routes. A high level flow is depicted below:. The fabric is stitched to the VPN service. Once the tenant flows within the 2 data centers are stitched to the IP VPN service, routes from data center left are connected to data center right and vice versa.
The two borderPE switches are configured as a vPC. Prefix routes and leaf switch generated routes are not synced between vPC leaf switches. Using the VIP as the BGP next-hop for these types of routes can cause traffic to be forwarded to the wrong vPC leaf or border leaf switch and black-holed.
The provision to use the primary IP address PIP as the next-hop when advertising prefix routes or loopback interface routes in BGP on vPC enabled leaf or border leaf switches allows users to select the PIP as BGP next-hop when advertising these types of routes, so that traffic will always be forwarded to the right vPC enabled leaf or border leaf switch.
The configuration command for advertising the PIP is advertise-pip. If there is link failure between one of the two borderPE switches and the connected L3VPN ASBR, the switch will withdraw the BGP routes that are being advertised towards the fabric and traffic re-convergence happens through the redundant border leaf switch. For border leaf switches in a two box solutionthe default route will be withdrawn when both links to the DC Edge router fail.
For a borderPE switch, advertising default route is not recommended. Since the change of switch role requires a switch reload through write erase and reload commandsensure that this command is included in the startup configuration.
For the borderPE Layer-3 extension auto configuration feature, use the fabric forwarding switch-role border dci-node command.B uilding overlay networks using tunnels was always done to achieve connectivity between isolated networks that needed to share the same policies, VLANs or security domains.
In particular, they represent a strong use-case in the data center, where tunnels are created between the hypervisors in different locations allowing virtual machines to be provisioned independently from the physical network. In this post I am going to present how to build such tunnels between Open vSwitch bridges running on separate machines, thus creating an overlay virtual Layer 2 network on top of the physical Layer 3 one.
By itself, this article does not bring anything new - there are multiple blogs describing various tunneling protocols. The particularity of this post is that I present multiple encapsulations with packet capture and iperf tests and the fact that, instead of hypervisors and VMs, I am going to use OVS bridges and network namespaces - both of these are extensively used in emerging data center standards and products such as OpenStack or CloudStack.
I encourage you to follow the steps described in this post, perform the same iperf tests and packet captures, if you want and share with me the results you've got!
Before we start I'd like to mention the inspirational articles on this topic from Scott Lowe and Brent Salisbury. This lab is based on the setup explained in this post - up to the point of creating the network namespaces. I am using two virtual machines VirtualBoxes managed via Vagrant called vagrant box-1 and vagrant box-2 connected via Host-Only Adapters The task is to achieve Layer 2 connectivity between two network namespaces think of VMs in a data center world created on these two vagrant boxes think of hypervisors.
Now we are going to use Open vSwitch commands to create tunnels between the OVS bridges in order to connect the left and right namespaces at Layer 2.
Before you proceed, make sure that you are back in the initial state by rebooting both vagrant boxes. Let's create everything except the tunnels - more info about the setup can be found in this post :. One question you may ask is: how does the tunnel work between OVS switches sw1 and sw2 since the physical interfaces enp0s8 do not belong to them?
It looks like the OVS bridge is not connected to the outside world at all! The answer is not that obvious, unfortunately. A very interesting post on this topic was written by Scott Lowe here. Since the GRETAP traffic is going via the physical enp0s8 interface, let's perform tcpdump on it and dissect it with wireshark - here you can view the entire packet capture :.
Introduction to Virtual Extensible LAN (VXLAN)
Here is how communication between internal VMs You can view the entire packet capture here. If you followed this post, before testing Geneve, make sure you delete the previous VXLAN tunnel: sudo ovs-vsctl del-port tun0 The next encapsulation to be presented is Genevea tunneling technique with a flexible format that allows metadata information to be carried inside Variable Length Options and provides service chaining think firewall, load balancing, etc. Geneve header is more like an IPv6 header with basic fixed-length fields and extension headers used to enable different functions.
Let's have a look at its configuration and packet capture:. Here is the full packet capture - unfortunately, the CloudShark provider, where I store these captures, does not have a dissector for Geneve traffic, but Wireshark does see image below :.
Again, if you followed along, delete the previously created Geneve tunnel on both vagrant boxes: ovs-vsctl del-port tun0 GREoIPsec does not need any introduction, so let's do the configuration.
Here is the full packet capturebut of course, as it's IPsec, you will only see the outer IP header But if you use Wireshark, you can provide the keys and it will decrypt it for you - see below:.
Since this post became very long, I decided to leave the iperf tests for a separate article, also because you will have to deal with MTU issues and TCP Segmentation Offload tso - it will be better to explain all of that in a separate post! Thanks for your interest! Stay tuned for the follow-up articles on this topic! Open vSwitch OVS. MACsec Implementation on Linux.

Autonomous Number AS. BGP Attacks. CE Router. CE-PE Protocols. Candidate RP.Multi-homing on Data Center Gateways. Split Horizon. You can:. The interconnection of the data center network is realized on the data center gateway router through a pair of logical tunnel lt- interface. The support for active-active multi-homing is provided at the data center gateway routers for interconnection.
Broadcast, unknown unicast, and multicast BUM traffic is forwarded out of the data center by one of the data center gateways. The ESI, a octet value that must be unique across the entire network, is configured on a per port basis for the logical tunnel lt- interface. Advertise an ESI auto-discovery route with a valid split-horizon label and mode set to multi-homing.
When redundancy is configured in data center gateways, the traffic is load-balanced among redundant data center gateway routers on a per flow basis. Each EVPN instance on the data center gateway router declares the support of aliasing function for the ESI configured on the logical tunnel lt- interface by advertising per EVI auto-discovery route. The aliasing functionality support is defined in the RFC As long as the host is connected to another ToR device in the data center network, the host is still accessible by all the other redundant data center gateway routers, so the aliasing functionality applies.
When the trunk mode is used for the logical tunnel lt- interface, the frames going out of the logical tunnel lt- interface trunk port from the first EVPN virtual switch are tagged with the appropriate VLAN tag; going through its peer logical tunnel lt- interface, the incoming frames to the second virtual switch are inspected and forwarded based on the VLAN tag found within the frame.
Another important factor to consider is the AS assignment. Spine switches provide connection for east and west traffic among ToRs so that traffic that does not need to be Layer 3 routed does not go through the MX routers. From a network design perspective, to provide an end-to-end EVPN solution, the following requirements must be met:.
Between spine switches and data center gateways, you still need to use eBGP for advertising loopback IP. In this case, it is a typical 2 stage CLOS network without spine aggregation layer. Each ToR and data center gateway is assigned a unique AS number. ToR establishes eBGP session with data center gateway routers directly.
Running eBGP only for the Overlay. Data traffic between ToRs that belongs to the same bridge domain goes through spine switch only and it is always 2 hops away. Each data center gateway router uses a unique AS number on the data center facing side.
The AS number may also be reused in each data center. Help us improve your experience. Let us know what you think. Do you have time for a two-minute survey? Maybe Later.According to the IEEE The VXLAN protocol overcomes this limitation by using a longer logical network identifier that allows more VLANs and, therefore, more logical network isolation for large networks such as clouds that typically include many virtual machines.
This means that VXLANs based on MX Series routers provide network segmentation at the scale required by cloud builders to support very large numbers of tenants. You can enable migration of virtual machines between servers that exist in separate Layer 2 domains by tunneling the traffic over Layer 3 networks.
EVPN-VXLAN Data Center Interconnect Through EVPN-MPLS WAN Overview
This functionality allows you to dynamically allocate resources within or between data centers without being constrained by Layer 2 boundaries or being forced to create large or geographically stretched Layer 2 domains.
In the absence of STP, none of your links are blocked, which means you can get full value from all the ports that you purchase. Using routing protocols to connect your Layer 2 domains also allows you to load-balance the traffic to ensure that you get the best use of your available bandwidth. Given the amount of east-west traffic that often flows within or between data centers, maximizing your network performance for that traffic is very important. In this environment, software-defined networking SDN controllers are not deployed.
All switches except EXMP In an environment with or without an SDN controller, act as a Layer 2 gateway between virtualized and nonvirtualized networks in the same data center or between data centers. EXMP switches Act as a Layer 2 gateway between virtualized and nonvirtualized networks in a campus network.
All switches except EXMP Act as a Layer 2 gateway between virtualized networks in the same or different data centers and allow virtual machines to move VMotion between those networks and data centers. For example, if the switch is using the default MTU value of bytes and you want to forward byte packets over the VXLAN, you need to increase the MTU to allow for the increased packet size caused by the additional headers.
Starting with Junos OS Release When the switch acting as a VTEP receives a broadcast, unknown unicast, or multicast packet, it performs the following actions on the packet:. In this case, no traffic will be forwarded for the specified group but all other multicast traffic will be forwarded. Act as a Layer 2 gateway between virtualized and nonvirtualized networks in the same data center or between data centers.
Act as a Layer 2 gateway between virtualized networks in the same or different data centers and allow virtual machines to move VMotion between those networks and data centers. If possible, you should assign a different multicast group address to each VXLAN, although this is not required. That is, the encapsulating VTEP does not copy and send copies of the packets according to the multicast tree—it only forwards the received multicast packets to the remote VTEPs. The remote VTEPs de-encapsulate the encapsulated multicast packets and forward them to the appropriate Layer 2 interfaces.
